Most of us have probably dreamed of being sat in the ‘big chair' in the ‘Who Wants To Be A Millionaire' studio, waiting to face the million-pound question. The show is back on the air now with Jeremy Clarkson replacing Chris Tarrant in the host's seat, so you're welcome to try your luck as a contestant! In the meantime, though, you can enjoy the next best thing by playing Big Time Gaming's officially licensed slot game, which based on the series and was released in late 2018.

This isn't the first time the game show has been adapted into a slot game; Ash Gaming did it as recently as 2014. Unfortunately for Ash, they didn't have the advantage of Big Time Gaming's ‘Megaways' system, which adds a whole new dimension to the way slot games are played.

If you're new to Megaways, let us start by assuring you that it's not as complicated as it sounds. A Megaways slot is actually designed to give you the best possible chance of regular wins! The first thing you'll notice about playing one of Big Time's Megaways games is that there are six reels, so it's a large layout. Each of those reels may have as few as two rows. It may also have as many as six. The symbols on the rows may be different sizes, and one reel is likely to have a different number of symbols on it than its neighbor. The number of rows per reel will change every time the reels are spun. Because there are so many different possible combinations of symbol size, row, and reel, the game has a maximum of 117,649 pay lines available.

There’s a seventh row below the reels, which has four symbols on it, but we’ll address them when we come to talk about the slot’s bonus features.

When it comes to graphical presentation, this slot is precisely where it should be - in the instantly-recognizable ‘Who Wants To Be A Millionaire’ studio. We have a great view of it, helped by the fact that the rows and reels are semi-transparent. If we turn our attention to those reels, we’ll find that the symbols with the least worth are represented by playing cards 9 through to A. The more valuable symbols have been taken directly from another of Big Time Gaming’s Megaways slots; Bonanza. They’re gemstones - a red one, a purple one, a blue one and a green one.

‘Who Wants To Be A Millionaire' is all about questions, and so it's fitting that a question mark represents the wild. That can replace every other symbol apart from the ‘Who Wants To Be A Millionaire' logo, which is a scatter. Don't look for it on the reels when you spin though; you won't find it. The scatter comes from elsewhere, and to explain that we need to take a closer look at the bonuses!

Game Bonus Features

As per Big Time Gaming’s other Megaways slots, the Collapsing Wins bonus feature here. More happens than just you receiving some winnings happens when you find a payline in ‘Who Wants To Be A Millionaire' - the symbols involved in that line disappear, and they're replaced by symbols which come from the additional row below the reels. They might combine with the symbols already on the reels to make even more wins, and so more symbols from the extra row will come to replace them. The extra row is the only place the scatter symbols can come from, so you need a good series of collapsing wins to tease those symbols out.

You need to find those scatters to start the Free Spins feature. It may take you some time, but it's well worth doing both in terms of the potential rewards and the playing experience. If you begin the slot with three scatter symbols, you have eight free spins. If you managed to drag four from the extra row, you'd have ten spins. You can accept that, or you can gamble for more. Anyone who chooses to gamble then has to climb up the ‘Who Wants To Be A Millionaire' question ladder, which feels just like being on the show. You'll be presented with four options, and you can choose A, B, C, or D to start gambling. The further up the ladder you get, the more free spins you receive. You can use any of the show's lifelines to help you as well. Be as cautious as you would on the show, though - answer incorrectly and you could be left with no spins at all.

When you finally choose to ‘take the money’ and start your spins, you’ll find that each win increases the multiplier applied to your winnings by x1. If you can chain a few wins together using Collapsing Wins, you could get a long way north of x10 before the round is over, which means big cash prizes.

We already had a good impression of Big Time Gaming before we came to play and review this slot, but we have to say that they’ve excelled themselves here. This is outstanding.

Who Wants to be a Millionaire Developer - Big Time Gaming

Big Time Gaming developer logo

This British company is making headlines in the online slot world as of late. Their ‘Megaways' system has captured the imagination of players, and seen other developers scrambling to come up with something similar. Blueprint Gaming liked it so much that they worked out a deal with Big Time to use it in their own slots.

Other Big Time Gaming slots which use Megaways include Chilli Heat, Diamond Mine and Bonanza, the latter of which won ‘iGaming Software of the Year' from the Meister Awards in 2018. They narrowly beat another of their slots into second place, namely Danger: High Voltage. It would seem that as far as Meister are concerned, Big Time Gaming are currently in a league of their own.

We love to see boldness and originality in an online slot developer, and we see plenty of it in Big Time Gaming. Picking up licenses to make major tie-in products like this slot are another string to their bow, and we feel like they have even better days ahead of them. We look forward to playing (and hosting!) whatever they do next.
