The setting of this slot isn’t just the time of Vikings in general; we’ve gone to sea on a narrowboat, and we’re locked in combat with Sirens. In terms of presentation, this is a large set of 5x4 reels and rows, within which there are 25 fixed paylines. Those reels are part of the sail of a large Viking narrowboat, and across the bottom, you'll find a series of Viking warrior characters. Yggdrasil has gone all-in on the theming of this slot, so there are no boring royal playing cards anywhere in sight as symbols. Instead, the low values are represented by differently colored coins, of which there are four. On top of them are our four Vikings warriors - three bearded and burly-looking men, and one woman with fierce face paint.

There are three further symbols to pay attention to in the base game. One of them is a warrior's shield, which works as the slot's wild, and replaces everything apart from the other special symbols to create wins for you. The Free Spins symbol is a scatter (and does precisely what you think it does), and on the final two reels, you'll also see a treasure chest. That one is especially important in terms of the bonus features, so we'll move onto those now.

Game Features

This slot is really all about the bonus features, and it does a good job of making them seem important.

First and foremost, there’s a Free Spins bonus feature to play for. Land at least three of the free spins scatters, and your round will begin. The more scatters you have, though, the more joy you’ll get out of this round. Three symbols are worth seven spins, four are worth 14, and all five will bring you 21. You don’t just get the free spins here - this is one of the more generous UK slots, and it will also bring you an extra benefit at random.

That benefit can take one of five forms. You'll either have all your Viking warriors 'go berzerk' (we'll talk about that more below), a sticky wild somewhere on your reels throughout the free spins, an additional number of up to three free spins, or five more of the treasure chests on the reels. Again, we'll discuss the treasure chests more in a moment.

After each spin, a Siren will appear and attempt to get rid of any Viking symbols by fighting with them. If your Viking wins the fight, they stay in place as a sticky wild. If they lose, they're gone. Usually, your Viking will lose the fight unless they've 'gone berzerk.'

The Treasure Chest symbols also come into play with the bonus features, and they only need to land once to be worth something! If your treasure chest lands on the fourth reel, you'll get a random prize which will either be a multiplier of your stake (max award x1000), or instant access to the free spins feature. If it lands on the fifth reel, you may get either of the above, or get 25% awarded to all of the Viking' rage meters' (see below), or a special round of 'Ragnarok Free Spins' during which all of your Vikings have 'gone berzerk,' and cannot be defeated by the Siren.

Viking Rage is where your Vikings finally go berzerk! There are four meters under the reels, each related to one of the Viking characters. Every time that character is involved in a win, their meter will fill up a little. Once it’s full, you get 7 free spins, and during those spins, your Viking is berzerk, and can’t lose to the Siren.

To cut a long story short; when we say a Viking is berzerk, we mean they’ll always become a sticky wild during the free spins!

The man in the driving seat of the company is responsible for their name and their philosophy - he's Frederik Elmqvist, Swedish by birth and once a senior executive at rival studio Net Ent. When he broke away from Net Ent in 2013, he assembled a crack squad of leading slot designers and set to work.

Given that they've been open for business barely five years, they deserve special congratulations for picking up the 'Innovator of the Year' award from the International Gaming Awards in 2018.
