We’re used to seeing Yggdrasil come up with imaginative and good looking history-themed slots. Those slots tend to be focused on the days of Viking warriors, though. That makes the Egyptian-themed Valley of the Gods a break from the norm for the developer, and it’s a clever slot with an ingenious bonus feature. The more you win in this slot, the more you’re likely to win on your next spin!

It takes something special to stand out from the crowd when it comes to Egyptian-themed slots. There are so many UK slots out there making use of the theme, with so many different ideas and functions, that any new release is in danger of simply being lost in the mix. By 2017, which is when Valley of the Gods was released, Yggdrasil would have known that they’d need something special to garner attention and make their new creation a profitable one. Fortunately, they have some of the best minds in the UK slot games business when it comes to doing just that.

For a start, Valley of the Gods is a big slot. There are five reels and five rows, meaning those reels almost wholly occupy the playing area. Fortunately, the symbols on the reels are transparent, which allows us a better look at the atmospheric background. The setting for the slot is an Egyptian sandstone temple which is covered in carvings and hieroglyphs. An imposing pair of statues stand either side of the reels, acting as a frame, but they also have a secondary purpose which we'll come to later.

Having all of those rows means that there's plenty of space for paylines, but to be able to include a massive 3125, Yggdrasil did away with the conventional payline structure altogether. So long as you have matching symbols on neighboring reels, they'll be included as part of a line, and counted towards wins. That means wins happen frequently here - they have to, or the bonus feature wouldn't work. We'll talk more about that in a moment.

In terms of the symbols, everything you'll see on the reels is in keeping with the Egyptian theme. The lowest values are made up of various Egyptian icons including the Eye of Ra, an Ankh, and a cat, and have gemstones inlaid into them. Those stones also have a further purpose - and we promise we'll start talking about these 'further purposes' in just a moment! The four most valuable symbols are pictures of three different Egyptian gods, and the gold mask of Tutankhamun.

Yggdrasil has broken with the tradition of modern UK slot games by doing away with both wild symbols and scatter symbols in this slot; there aren't any. What you will see instead are sandstone-colored scarab beetle symbols, which are 'blocks' on the reels, on which no symbols can land. Doing away with these 'blocks' is the key to winning big money. This is where it becomes relevant to talk about the bonus features!

Game Features

There’s only one bonus feature in Valley of the Gods, but it’s such a clever and exciting one that we don’t mind not having any other options. It’s also triggered in an unusual way. We don’t think many slots UK players will have come across before function in this manner.

Free Spins

Technically, the bonus feature is Free Spins, but those free spins can either end after one spin, or go on forever. When you start playing Valley of the Gods, you'll find that the scarab symbols block twelve of the positions on the reels. Each time you make a winning combination, blocks will be removed. If your winning combination involves three symbols, three blocks will disappear. If it includes four, four will vanish. If it involves five…. we're sure you get the picture! The catch is that the wins have to be back to back to remove blocks - the moment you spin once without winning anything, all of those scarab blocks will be back on the reels.

Once you've cleared off every single block, your spins are free and will remain free for as long as the wins keep coming. This is when those gemstones on the less valuable symbols become important. All the blue gems go across to the left-hand statue next to the reels, and the red ones go to the right. The left-hand statue awards you more and more multipliers as you find more stones, and the one on the right handles your 'lives.' You lose a life each time you spin without seeing a win. When you're out of lives, the free spins feature is over, and you're back to the base game - with the blocks back in place.

Every UK slots player wants to win on every spin, but this slot practically demands It of you! It might take you a while to clear off all the blocks, but once you’ve done so, getting onto a good roll inside the feature is a lot of fun - especially when you’ve built up a good multiplier to go with it.

Valley of the Gods Developer - Yggdrasil

Yggdrasil developer logo

You pronounce the name of this provider "Ig-dras-il" - a fact that they're so keen to make people aware of that they list it on almost every page of their website! The name is connected to Norse mythology, and is the name of the tree of life in old Norse legend. As well as having a Norse-legend linked name, they like to produce Norse-legend themed slots. There have been many slots UK casinos have featured in recent years which star Vikings; Yggdrasil has released a whole series of them, and would like to be considered the master of their genre.

With so much connection to that part of the world, you would probably expect Yggdrasil to be Scandinavian, but they’re not - they’re Maltese. Their CEO, however, is Swedish. He’s Frederik Elmqvist, and was once a senior executive at the much-larger company Net Ent before leaving to start his own company in 2013. Outside of their extensive Vikings range - which includes the popular Vikings Go Berserk slot and Viking Wilds slot game - they’ve also tried their hand at other genres, as seen in Valley of the Gods and also in Dwarf Mine.

After less than five years trading, Yggdrasil was delighted to be named 'Innovator of the Year' during the International Gaming Awards in 2018. With the originality they've displayed in Valley of the Gods, it's easy to see why they were chosen.
