If you grew up in Great Britain or the USA during the 1980s, it seems impossible that you won't have seen the crazy kids movie ‘The Goonies.' It had everything from a monster to a secret pirate ship to buried treasure. It was like a children's version of ‘Indiana Jones', and today it's considered a cult classic. As the audience who saw the film will now be all grown up, Blueprint has cleverly decided that the same audience may now be playing slot games. They're right - we're here, and we love what they've done with this slot. Let's not be ‘sloths' about this - let's dive right in!

The movie starts with a basic plot about a gang of children coming together to stop their homes from being demolished. It slowly adds the levels of crazy as the plot progresses, culminating in the search for buried pirate treasure at the end. Some of that treasure is on offer to those who play this slot, so don't miss out on your chance to grab it! All the movie tie-ins happen in the slot's numerous bonus features. The base game feels like it lacks something visually, with a basic treasure map providing the background of the reels. We're more pleased with the soundtrack, which is taken directly from the film and keeps the atmosphere going.

The reels that appear on the treasure map are mostly taken from the ‘Goonies’ film world, but the lowest-value ones are the same old J through to A which you’ve seen a hundred times before. You’ll make more valuable winning lines if you find measuring scales, a skeleton symbol, the pirate ship, a chest full of treasure or most valuable of all the skull-and-crossbones flag, which can stack.

The slot's wild is a silver coin, capable of replacing everything apart from the scatter symbol to make paying lines. The scatter is symbolized by One-Eyed Willy, the long-deceased captain of the pirate ship ‘Inferno.'

Game Bonus Features

There are a lot of bonus features in this slot! Some of them are reel modifiers which will happen of their own accord, and others are triggered by the scatter.

To trigger any bonus feature using the scatter, you need to find a minimum of three One-Eyed Willy symbols on a single spin. That allows you to have a spin of the Inferno’s wheel and set course for one of the following four bonus features.

Skeleton Organ works as a prize-picker feature. You’re presented with a series of options, and you click on them to your heart’s content. Some of them will be multipliers of your stake. Others might open up another bonus feature for you. Just try to stay clear of the skull-and-crossbones; three of them will terminate your round.

Very similar to the skeleton organ is the Fratelli Hideout round. You’re still picking prizes, but this time they’re all represented by keys. Again, some of them will be cash prizes, some will open up other bonuses, and one will stop your round instantly.

Goonies Go Wild is one of three free spins features the Goonies slot has to offer. In this feature, one of the higher value symbols in the slot turns into a second wild. After each spin, you’re presented with a choice of three copper pots. One pot contains more free spins. Another opens up one of the other bonus features. The third exits the feature. Be lucky!

The second free spins feature is called Super Sloth. This takes you to a brand new set of reels, where all the symbols are members of the Fratelli family (this will make sense if you’ve seen the film, but don’t worry about it if you haven’t). Sloth serves as the ‘super wild’ symbol. As with the other free spins round, you’ll face the copper pot choice when you’re out of free spins, with the same potential outcomes.

Free spins option number three is Inferno Free Spins, which is the most lucrative. At least one - and possibly up to three - of the reels will be completely wild on each spin. You can make a lot of money if you get the chance to play this feature! It continues or exits via the copper pots, as per the above two features.

The highest-value feature round of them all is One-Eyed Willy’s Treasure Bonus. You can enter this feature directly if you land five scatter symbols in the base game, but otherwise, it can only be accessed through the other bonus features. Multiplier accrues on top of multiplier during this feature, with your winnings rising higher and higher! How much can you win before you hit a booby trap, and the round ends?

On top of all those bonus features are the reel modifiers, of which there are six. They're randomly generated, and so can happen on any spin or no spin at all.

The features are names for character’s in the film, so Mikey’s Hidden Riches, for example, will turn one of the reels wild.

Chunk’s Truffle Shuffle Wilds add extra wilds to the reels.

Mouth’s Lucky Coins are special golden coin symbols which can’t appear from any other source. When they hit the reels, they transform into matching symbols.

Data’s Colossal Symbol is exactly what it sounds like; it merges three of the reels into one symbol and guarantees a win.

Sloth’s Win Spin is a guaranteed large cash payout on your next spin. Thanks, Sloth!

One Eyed Willy’s Bonus Boost, as you may suspect, puts more scatter symbols onto the reels and gives you a better chance of triggering a ‘proper’ bonus feature.

With so much going on the slot can feel almost overwhelming, but it's easier to play than it is to read about. Plus, all of the bonuses are great fun and occur with reasonable regularity. If you did watch the movie when you were growing up, this slot is a nostalgia overload!

The Goonies Developer - Blueprint Gaming

Blueprint Gaming developer logo

German-owned but British-based, you can find the offices of Blueprint Gaming in Newark, close to Nottingham. They've made outstanding visual design their benchmark, and have also displayed a habit of packing more bonus features into their slots than any other developer we've ever seen. Some traditionalists may be put off by that, but if you like slots that give you a little ‘something extra,' then they may be one of your favorite developers out there.

Making movie-themed slots is almost what Blueprint do by definition. ‘The Goonies' is just one such example, but they've also made slots based on ‘Austin Powers,' ‘Ted,' ‘Spinal Tap,' ‘Mars Attacks!' and many more. They were even responsible for ‘Three Lions,' the official slot of the England football team! The fact that so many major brands are willing to put their trust in them tells you everything about the standard they work to. Playing a Blueprint slot should always put a smile on your face.
